Documentary archive | Two original manuscripts, a sketch, and what seems to be a draft score have been preserved; the latter is entitled “Funeral Wake.” It is apparently a version for piano, meant for later orchestration for the musical revue Upa y Apa. |
Notes by compiler | This music was written for the musical revue Upa y Apa: A Mexican Show, presented in Mexico and New York in 1939. The reserved archive of the Faculty of Music (Cuicamatini Library) possesses a photocopy of a version for piano and voice entitled “Retablo,” not written in the composer’s hand. Another version of this work is found in the archive of the National Music Conservatory (donated by Luis Sandi in 1963). Titled Funeral Wake: A Comic Ballet (with text by Xavier Villaurrutia), it is also a version for piano, with indications for later orchestration. It includes “indications of action.” |
